Following the launch of the Story Object Model (SOM) at IBC in September, we’re continuing the conversation with our partners AP and Mimir in a live webinar this month. Find out all about what this new model means for newsrooms and the future of news broadcasting and production from some of the people behind building it.

What is SOM and why is it important for breaking news

‍

SOM is a common format that any tool can publish to and read from. When a story is breaking, nobody has time to tell six different systems the same thing six times. That’s exactly why the Story Object Model matters. Instead of every tool in the newsroom holding its own partial version of events, SOM turns the story itself into one shared record that every connected system can read from and add to in real time.

‍

SOM is MOS in the age of AI. Where MOS gave newsroom tools a shared language in the 1990s, SOM’s aim is to do the same for the agentic era but this time with an editorial language rather than just operational.

How AP, Mimir and Trint work together on SOM

‍

We’re all on the bus together, that’s how.

‍

The SOM bus is the name for the channel every tool plugs into. When something happens in the story, a tool like AP can publish it to the bus. Every other tool attached to that story – Trint, Mimir – then hears about it and can act without hassle. Trint sources the key moment and Mimir takes the clip to be cut. This way, the three platforms work together on the SOM bus to get the live story verified and published quicker.
